Part of Loughborough's boxing story

The club's roots in Loughborough go back generations — including this 2007 feature in The Loughborough Echo, which traced one member's journey all the way to a Midlands Counties ABA championship final. Different coaches, same gym, same values: turn up, work hard, look after each other.

Coach Amo demonstrating pad work at Loughborough Boxing Club

Head coach

Coach Amo

Former amateur boxer Former army boxing coach 48 years in the sport

Amo put on his first pair of gloves at 14. By 17 he was fighting out of Leicester's Checketts Road Working Men's Club, taking bout after bout and rarely losing. When Loughborough Boxing Club opened its doors, he moved across and boxed under its name for years. Once he passed 34 — the age England Boxing draws the line on competing — he hung up his gloves and stepped fully into coaching, going on to train army boxers as well as coaching at the club. Forty-eight years in the sport, and he's still in the ring every session.

That history is what you're getting when you train here: a coach who corrects your guard from inside the ring, not shouting from the sideline. Patient with beginners, demanding with anyone chasing a fight, and the kind of coach who knows every member by name.

FAQ

None at all. Most of our adult members walked in never having boxed before. We start everyone on the basics — stance, footwork, pad work — before anything else.

From 5 years old. Kids' sessions are non-contact and fitness/technique focused, run separately from the adult classes, with coaches experienced in working with young people.

Just yourself, trainers and something to train in. We have gloves and pads to borrow for your first few sessions — no need to buy kit until you know you're sticking with it.

Every session is £5. Pay as you train, with no contract or membership tie-in.

No. Plenty of our members train purely for fitness and technique and never spar. Sparring only happens for those who want it, at the coach's discretion, with the right protective gear.
